Top 5 Safety Tips For Road Trips


Many times in our hectic lives we decide last minute to take a break from the rat race. While it always is nice to decide something last minute. Safety is something that should be decided in advance. You need to be prepared at all times while riding a motorcycle only allows you to enhance your safety. I am going to share with you what I feel is my top 5 tip or items to always have with you when you are traveling. While it does take some time to get these things gathered and some purchased. Many of these tips are a one shot deal, and once you have added them to your road plans you will not have to think about them again. But will be very thankful you have them god forbid you have problems.
Tip1: Fist Aid Kit. Always remember to purchase a complete First Aid Kit and bring it along with you. Now days First Aid Kits can be pretty extensive, I feel that the more variety is always the best choice. We sometimes forget to restock the First Aid Kit once we have used something out of it. The best habit to get into is when you use something make sure it is replaced before going out again. A couple of add ins for the First Aid Kit is a cell phone, flashlight, spare cash, a map of where you are traveling, food, and fresh water. Make sure that your cell phone is fully charged and you have new batteries in your flashlight. An hour long trip can turn into 6-9 hour trip quickly and you will want to make sure that your battery will last those extra hours. Spare cash is always a good habit to get into. Having saddlebag or extra storage on your motorcycle for these items is a great idea. Putting that extra cash that you don't touch unless it's an emergency is a great safety tip.
Tip2: Light weight blanket. Putting a light weight blanket or extra clothing in your saddlebag or storage bags on your motorcycle will come in handy if you run into unexpected travel conditions. Depending on the time of year of travel and area you are traveling in you will want to adjust the thickness of these items. If god forbid something happened and you had to wait for help while it got chilly it is nice to have that spare clothing or blanket to keep warm.
Tip3: Travel as a group. Traveling as a group, not only increase your visibility on the road but also adds to the number of helping hands if something where to go wrong. Another great benefit to traveling in a group is that you have more resources in an accident. Many people react differently when in stressful situations and having extra people to help calm the chaos can make things easier to deal with.
Tip 4: Check Road Conditions. It may not sound like something you should have to do if you travel the same road all the time, but things change without notice and you must always be prepared. If traveling somewhere new it is always a good idea to check on the internet for any advice on the area in which you will be traveling or asking someone you know, who has traveled there before. Checking a couple days in advance is always good, but don't forget to check as your walking out the door.
Tip 5: Let Someone Know: It may sound a bit strange that once we have grown up and are out on our own that we should still have to check in with someone. Letting someone know where you plan on traveling helps them to know that you are safe. Making a plan on where you will be at what time helps so if something happens they can let the authorities know a more specific location. A good idea is to always call when you have arrived at your location and at least one call along the way if it is going to be more than a 5 hour ride. Always lean toward the side of caution.
There are many more things that you should take into consideration when planning a trip on the open road. Many times things will change depending on what trip you are taking, but these are my top 5 tips for any type of road trip to add to your safety. Buying Parts: Do I Have To Use One Manufacturer? By Dravor Spencer

There is one thing that is pretty common on almost all scooter and even some larger bikes, the handlebars. In most all cases where a bar measures larger than 22.2mm/ 7/8", from the center of the bar to the controls it will taper down to the 7/8"/22.2mm controls. This allows for most all grips and controls to work between many types of bikes. This also allows them to be used with many types of bar stems to hold on to the bars as well. Grips are also all universal, so you have choices in rubber to foam to add as much hand grip and/or comfort as you need or want. Some gauges are also universal, as reading head temperature, water temperature, RPMs, fuel level, and lambda (air/fuel ratio) readings are all standardized in many cases. It's usually the sensors themselves than can be specialized to the gauges.
Lights and their controls can also be universal or be used between manufacturers, but some wiring may need to be done to make them work. There may also be some bracket fabrication required to make a light fit or work, too. There are also universal lights that only require a power and a ground to work. Flasher Relays are fairly universal, but even adapting them isn't much of a challenge if you're good at crimping wires together. A couple of spade terminals and connectors will even allow you to retain the OEM connector most of the time.
If there is a common theme in any universal part it is this: Adapt or Die! Even if a part is universal, there may be adapters, brackets, wiring, or even fabrication required to make a part work. Manufacturers try to plan for every possible bike for every situation they can think of. However, this is impossible considering most of these parts are sold all over the world for bikes of several manufacturers and even model changes between a single bike model in several countries. I would make it a kin to guessing the lottery in several countries and some of those countries may be 4 numbers, some maybe 6, some may use letters.
Universal parts aren't always perfect either. You may have to trim them to fit, clean them up, or even paint them. Again, they are designed as universal parts, so some fit and finish is required to make them work. This is also the case where if you don't know what you're doing, it will be better to hire someone who does. If you can't wire up lights, you can't paint, or you have never turned a wrench in your life, this may not be the best time to learn; but even so, this isn't always the case. If it is a part that requires you to tighten a bolt or a nut, yeah, anyone could do it. However, painting, cutting, and wiring are completely different animals. Those issues are things someone with experience should handle. So don't be afraid of universal parts or having to stick with one aftermarket manufacturer, it's all about making your bike yours!

Motorcycles and Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)


It's probably not unfair to say that the Compulsory Basic Training or CBT for motorcycles has gone a long way to changing the public perception of motorbikes and those that ride them on the public highways. It (the CBT) was introduced more than two decades ago with the specific intention of reducing motorcycle related accidents on the road. With a combination of on road and off road training, those who proceed with the training are far more equipped for on road situations, than they would have been before the introduction of the test.
Motorbikes have endured a love - hate relationship over the years, although much of the hate has come from people who have perhaps been affected in some way by accidents involving these two wheeled machines. However, although there is a sporty, daring element that is indeed associated with bikes, it is a fact that many people, every single day, rely on them practically for their basic means of transportation.
For young people, the temptation has always been that a moped or low powered motorcycle is actually much cheaper to buy and run than a car and so as a result we see a lot of teenagers and young adults with motorcycles. The great news is that since 1990 when the CBT requirements were put into place, there has been a much greater emphasis on safety in every aspect of a motorcyclist's life.
So, just who is the CBT for? If you want to ride on a machine with a power of anything up to 125cc, then the training is for you. For those people aged between 17 and 21, there is also a practical test for a 125cc machine. If passed, the rider will actually only be able to ride bikes and mopeds within this power category for the next two years. There is something different for those aged 21 and over to complete and this is known as DAS or the Direct Access Scheme and this is the scheme that grants access to bikes that are bigger and more powerful.
Most of these courses and training schemes are conducted within the safe confines of a training centre, which allows professional trainers to monitor and guide each rider in their development. No rider will be taken onto the public roads, until the trainers deem that they are proficient enough with their motorcycle to do so.
So, it is clear that motorcycle safety has improved dramatically in recent years and largely thanks to the awareness of the compulsory basic training.

10 Tips for a Routine Motorcycle Inspection

Our bikes carry the most precious cargo there is - us. Taking time for a routine inspection can make a big difference when it comes to safety and our enjoyment of the ride. No one wants to be stranded on the side of the road, or have an accident because of mechanical failure.
We know that we're vulnerable on the road and that riding a motorcycle carries risk.  We can do a lot to lesson that risk by making both we and our bikes are fit and ready to ride.
Pre-ride inspections confirm they're worthy to carry us; checking them post-ride will catch any parts that may have come loose and we'll be able to note minor changes before they become major problems.
Your best resource is your owner's manual. Make these items part of your regular checks:
  1. Tires:

    • Pressure: Measure when tires are cold. Both the tire and motorcycle manufacturer will have specifications and in all likelihood, front and rear tires will be different.
    • Tread: If you're down to the wear bars, it's time for new tires. Look for worn tread, uneven wear, cracks, bulges, cupping, and any foreign objects. The photo shows something we found at one of our workshops.
  2. Spokes: Uniformly tight and intact; they can be tightened with a spoke wrench. Rims need to be true with no dents.

  3. Drive System: Unless it's electric, your bike will have either a chain, belt drive or drive shaft. Make sure chain tension is correct and that it's well lubricated. Check drive belt for wear and tension; if you have a shaft drive, check fluid levels and that there are no leaks.

  4. Cables & hoses: No fraying or kinking; no binding when handlebars are activated.

  5. Fluid levels: Oil, brake fluid, transmission, and coolant. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct way to assess. Make sure there are no leaks.

  6. Lights and electrics: Activate brake light with front and rear brakes independently; check front and rear indicators, horn, headlights - high and low beams.

  7. Throttle: Should snap back to home position.

  8. Brakes: - check brake pads for wear periodically. Test both front and rear to make sure they're working satisfactorily.

  9. Side stand: Retracts firmly: no bending, cracks or damage; the spring is intact and the cut-out switch functions.

  10. Clutch and brake levers: Smooth operation, correct amount of free play and proper adjustment.
Bonus: Look in the mirror. Make sure that you are physically, mentally and emotionally fit to ride.

Motorcycle Bluetooth Intercom Systems, Review of the Chatterbox XBi2

My primary reason for purchasing this ironically was not as an intercom. My lovely wife had bought me a really nice farkle for my birthday. My gift for turning the big 4-0 was a really cool Garmin Zumo 660 GPS. The Zumo 660 has the capability to stream wireless stereo sound via Bluetooth to devices capable of receiving A2DP, which in non-techno geek talk means stereo Bluetooth.
Why did I choose the Chatterbox XBI2At the time it was one of the very few wireless motorcycle intercom Bluetooth devices that used A2DP, and I was certain that I wanted a stereo feed. Reading consumer review sites like this one, the audio quality appeared to be quite good. So, I went onto the mighty consumer shopping mall, known as the Internet, and with a quick search came up with a good price and ordered.
A few days later two boxes arrived, (one for both my wife's helmet and my own). Time to figure out how to install and pair this intercom system. Kudos to the manufacturer: they used the magic of YouTube to give instructions on how to do everything. In reality, it is so simple to install the headset that it wasn't necessary, but it made the entire process even easier.
We both use full face helmets. The first helmet took around 30 minutes to install the full Bluetooth helmet speaker set. No doubt I read, and re-read the instructions three or more times, determined not to make any mistakes. The second helmet took only around 12 minutes. If I had to do it again I might make it in under 10 minutes. All that is involved is fitting the ear speakers, the microphone, tucking the wires, and installing the clip that holds the communicator. Between the clear included instruction guide, and their online video instructions installation is a snap.
Pairing the XBi2 to the Garmin Zumo 660 GPS was simple. Pairing them to each other, took me a few attempts. I ended up phoning Chatterbox's customer service number included in the directions and straight away my call was answered by a knowledgeable rep. He talked me through my mistake and bingo the communication units were magically paired up. Again two thumbs up to the manufacturer for having a real person answer the phone on the second ring, and getting my problem solved in under 2 minutes.
So how does it all work? Really, really well. On its own, if you buy this simply to use as a means to pair to a GPS or cell phone you won't be disappointed. Beautiful loud clear stereo sound. The microphone/speakers are of high quality. Music sounds great, GPS instructions are loud and clear, and telephone calls are easy to conduct. Right up to legal North American highway speeds, even with foam earplugs in, I am able to fully exploit all the functions within the GPS. On the track, at speeds above 130 km/h or 80 mph sounds remain audible, but the noise of wind etc on my semi fared bike do reduce the total audio experience. At high speeds the audio quality is more a function of your bike's wind management than anything else. No doubt those that use a quiet higher quality helmet will also have a better experience than those with a noisy lid.
Now how about as a motorcycle intercom. Again, it works really well. Stated communication range is half a mile or 800 meters, but I have found it will do even better so long as there is clear line of sight. The intercom is voice activated. Remember this when positioning your mic. Sound quality was excellent up to 115 km/h or 70 mph with it still being good above 130 km/h or 80 mph. Beyond these speeds one likely won't be too interested in chatting anyways, and the sound quality suffered due to insufficient volume to counter the rider/speed induced wind noise.
I often hear my riding buddies, (those whose wives don't ride), say that they would never want an intercom. I can say with all honesty I believe an intercom is one of the best safety enhancements to riding with a partner out there. Being able to communicate that there is loose gravel ahead, oil on the road, deer, moose, or even "sorry, missed the exit, we'll ride another mile before turning now", means that both riders are better able to focus on the road, and not have to watch each other as closely. That means both will better be able to scan for traffic and road hazards. Before when riding with my wife; I always felt a little bit handcuffed, checking the mirrors three times more than normal, and worrying about how she was doing. (Was the pace too fast, etc.) Now we can talk to one another as easily as if we are sitting next to each other in the car. I find riding together a lot more relaxing than ever before, and as a result I think we both have more fun with an increased margin of safety. She has also saved my bacon more than once by verbally warning me of dangerous cagers flying across multiple lanes or in my blind spot.
If you are lucky enough to have a spouse that rides, you owe it to each other to get a motorcycle intercom system. You will find that safety improves, and you both will be more relaxed and focused on the riding.
I am very impressed with the Chatterbox XBi2 and would recommend it without hesitation. There are other companies out there that make similar products, namely Scala and Sena and speaking with other riders that use them, all have had similar positive experiences. If I can leave you with any recommendation, it is just make sure that whatever you buy, make sure it will pair with whatever devices you use already (eg iPhone, GPS, etc.) Personally, I wouldn't consider buying an intercom that didn't stream in stereo (A2DP).
Being able be guided clearly by your motorcycle navigator, take phone calls, listen to your favorite tunes, and most importantly chat with your better half riding on another motorcycle half a mile away is a revelation. It is certainly worth a few hundred bucks, and is money I would spend ahead of many other farkles.

At first I wasn't sold on the idea of an intercom as I thought it was going to be distracting while riding. I was afraid that we were going to have long conversations like you would in a car and I was worried that this would distract me from focusing on the road. Reality is that we do not say that much to each other when we are riding, however, when we do, the comments made have often saved the ride from being a bad experience.
We can now point out dangers to each other, and I can now suggest that we stop somewhere instead of having to wait for my husband to make the decision. I always ride behind my husband and sometimes when you see something interesting you want to check out (read: ice cream shop!) it makes the ride so much more enjoyable when you can communicate this to the person you are riding with. No more waving arms and confusing hand signals when we are out riding together.
The installation seemed pretty straightforward. At least I didn't hear any swear words from the garage while my husband was working on this project. No requests for band aids either.
I feel a lot more at ease riding with my husband when I am able to communicate with him. Being able to let him know if I would like to stop somewhere and hearing his reassuring voice makes me a lot more relaxed and enjoy the ride a lot more than before we had the motorcycle intercom system installed.

The Engine: What Route Should I Go on My Honda Ruckus?

Everyone wants to go faster but the 49cc GET engine in the Honda Ruckus just isn't fast enough. Sure it can get you to 40-43MPH, but that isn't fast enough to keep up with traffic in most cases! That's just not safe, especially with the increase in distracted driving cases and motorcycle crashes. So, what can we do? How can we pick up more speed after maxing out what the variator, CVT, and gearing changes did? Luckily, there are a couple of Honda Ruckus parts on the table and we'll discuss them today!
The Honda Ruckus is quickly becoming the scooter to have to try and push to 50+MPH. The Honda reliability in the chassis and engine beckon tinkerers to make it faster. While not very common, increasing the bore of the Ruckus is starting to become popular; it offers great gains, but has some tradeoffs. The first tradeoff is time. The GET is a water-cooled engine and you have to take the cylinder off of the bike and take it down to a machine shop to bore out the cylinder to the size you need. Many machine shops are not capable of this because of how small the bore of the Ruckus is.
The next trade off is loss of reliability. With any upgrade, there is a risk of losing all reliability and it is especially so with the big bore upgrade to the GET engine. The final tradeoff is heat. With the big bore making the cylinder walls thinner, there is less area to shed heat from the cylinder, even with water-cooling. The oil also begins to heat up more, thus causing many failures in the engine.
If that puts you off of the big bore upgrade, there is good news in the engine swap arena. The Ruckus frame just begs to have something else in it. It is such a piece me together bike, it is no wonder people ask if you made it yourself. This is what makes the engine swap possible and slightly easier in the Ruckus versus other scooters. The most common is the Ruckus GY6 Swap, as the engine is cheap and plentiful. It is used in so many Chinese built scooters, you can find it anywhere. Even brand new, the GY6 is still inexpensive to purchase with most going for less than $500 out the door (but still would require a wheel made for the GY6). If you want the best wheel choices, you'll want to get a long CVT case engine as it will allow for up to a 13" wheel with low profile tires.
Once you get the GY6 engine, you'll have to choose how to mount it. There are many companies that offer GY6 swap mounts that range from inexpensive, normal tire weld-in mounts to completely bolt in 8" + fatty tire mounts. It's really up to you which direction you'd want to go. As with anything, there are some tradeoffs that must be considered.
The first is that this is a Chinese built engine. This isn't to knock everything Chinese made, but their reputation isn't exactly great. Reliability may be an issue on a used engine and a little less so on a new one. Second, this will not bolt into the OEM GET engine mounts or even aftermarket GET mounts. It looks similar, but it is not the same as it is wider. Third, the GY6 engine, even the 50cc short-case version, will not hook up to the GET wiring harness without modification or a new harness. Finally, there may be some legal issues with a swap. If you have to smog test your scooter, then a GY6 swap may not pass as most of the GY6 swaps involve the 125cc and 150cc versions. The short case 50cc GY6 could possibly pass, but you will not be gaining anything in that swap other than an air-cooled engine.
However, don't let this put you off of doing a GY6 engine or even big boring the GET engine. While each has negative tradeoffs, there is one positive tradeoff that overshadows them. That is the power you gain from a big bore or engine swap. The 125cc and 150cc GY6 engines are nearly capable of 60MPH out of the box and big bore GETs have shown anywhere from 55-60MPH. Whichever way you go, you will have a bike capable of beating most traffic on those surface streets.

Early History of Indian Motorcycle Company

Although the Indian Motorcycle Company was founded and started two years before the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company, it has not been able to stay on track nearly as long as this legendary company. However, its history is rich and exciting, and even though the motorcycles are no longer being manufactured in the original aspect, Indian continues to bring forth admirers and collectors of these amazing bikes.
The Indian Motorcycle Co. was founded in 1901 by George M. Hendee and Carl Oscar Hedstrom in Springfield, Massachusetts. In the early days, the company was known as the Hendee Mar Company, and started its beginning with America's very first motorcycle. The company was technologically advanced in a number of ways, including the introduction of the very first V-twin bike in the year 1907. This was far more advanced than the single motorcycles being produced by Harley-Davidson even in 1910.
In 1916, before World War I, Indian Motorcycles was one of approximately 20 American motorcycle companies that were trying to make it in the volatile market. Indian Motorcycle Co. accounted for 40 percent of the market share in 1916, making it one of the most popular in its time. The Powerplus line of bikes was sold to the US government in the years 1917 and 1918 for use in the military. As World War II arose, both Indian and Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company manufactured their motorcycles for military use, specifically the United States Army. The Army even requested a specialized motorcycle design that would allow fighting in deserts, and the Indian Motorcycle Company stepped up to the plate and produced a specific motorcycle for the military's needs. The 841 was born and a thousand were manufactured for the government.
In 1945, the company was bought out by Ralph B. Rogers, and many changes were made that may have caused the demise of the Indian Motorcycle Co. The more popular bikes, such as the Scout, were discontinued, and more lightweight designs were manufactured and introduced by 1949. However, the quality of these bikes were sub par, and loyal owners began to lose interest and hope in the future of the company. The company filed for bankruptcy and stopped producing motorcycles in 1953.
Indian Motorcycle Company has an exciting history that includes military support and many years as one of the top motorcycle companies in America, outselling and outperforming Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the early years. The tale of the Crocker motorbike starts in 1882 with the birth of Albert Crocker. A racer and engineer in his own right, Paul Bigsby, signed up with the shop as a foreman. Both men shared a love of design, motorbikes, and racing. An overhead conversion kit for 101 Scouts and Chiefs was developed and marketed to great acclaim. Flat course races started to grow, and Al and Paul created a one cylinder Speedway racer to compete within this class of racing. Approximations contrast on the number of Speedway racer motorcycles developed, but the concluded total seems to be somewhere in 30 and 40.

He bought the motorbike around 15 years ago at the AMCA meet in Davenport, Iowa, from Glen Bator, who had restored it earlier. The motorcycle is fitted with a 30-112", 500 cc, over head valve, one-cylinder engine that thumps out about 40 horsepower. Jerry's racer still maintains some of its genuine paint, and yes it appears like its moving 100 miles-per-hour simply fixed on its stand. He's proud of its history, and the fact that it is a rare machine just contributes to its aura.
